Rainforest

Canberra in Summer

Last summer was difficult for all of us as bushfires, storms and Covid pushed us to our limits. Many of us missed out on our summer routine activities and adventures. Fortunately for us, this summer is looking much better. Lots of rain has turned the dry landscape green and great progress controlling Covid-19 means this summer is on and it is here now. It is time to get back in touch with our favourite warm weather pass times – get to the water, have a picnic with friends and get outdoors.

The Murrumbidgee River at Uriarra Crossing is a perfect swimming spot just a short drive out of Canberra. Large shady trees, toilets, picnic tables and and wood-fire barbecues make for a perfect picnic spot this summer.

The inflatable water park at Black Mountain Peninsula has reopened last weekend. A perfect place to have a picnic while the kids (or daring adults) tackle the course.

Escape the crowds with a group of friends on one on Canberra’s Go-Boats. A perfect way to relax, unwind and enjoy a cold beverage.

To help cool you down on those hot days, try one of our favourite mocktail recipes – the virgin frozen margarita, truly the taste of summer.

Virgin Frozen Margarita:
Ingredients

  • Lime wedge
  • Coarse sugar
  • 1 (6-oz) can frozen limeade concentrate
  • 3/4 cup orange juice
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened grapefruit juice
  • 4 cups ice cubes

Instructions

Place the sugar on a shallow plate. Rub the edge of 4 glasses with the lime wedge, then dip the rims in the coarse sugar.

Combine the frozen limeade concentrate, orange juice, grapefruit juice and ice cubes in a blender and blend until slushy.

Pour into the glasses to serve.
